CVT established the National Capacity-Building Project to provide training and technical assistance to the emerging network of U.S.-based torture treatment programs. Many, although not all, of the NCB participating centers are also members of the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs.
Now in its seventh year, the project is already reaching more than 30 treatment centers and legal assistance organizations. To view list of centers and organizations on PDF click here.

This project is funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement under its Torture Victims Rehabilitation Act program (Office of Refugee Resettlement).
In addition to building stronger individual organizations, the project fosters relationships within the group and encourages members to share knowledge and skills.
From the beginning, the project has focused on needs identified by the participants themselves, ensuring the most effective use of resources possible.
The following areas have been identified as key to building a strong network of torture treatment programs:
-
clinical skills
-
fundraising
-
organizational development
-
creating effective advocacy programs
-
creating effective outreach programs
-
encouraging data collection
Participants have access to a variety of training and consultation services, including:
Resource Center The resource center gathers together key sources of information to help you better understand the needs of torture survivors and the problem of torture in our world today. Whether you are a professional looking for information on how to treat survivors of torture more effectively, a community member or someone from an affected group, we hope you will find valuable information on the impact and treatment of torture.
Webinars: On-line Seminars CVT offers monthly seminars on a variety of topics in the torture treatment field. These seminars are available to people working in organizations participating in the National Capacity Building Project.
Institutes CVT organizes a number of training institutes throughout the year. Each institute focuses on one aspect of a successful organization. In addition to intensive training, the institutes also offer participants a chance to meet their colleagues in the torture treatment field, share experiences and build collaborative relationships.
On-site Consultations and Subgrants On-site consultations and subgrants focus on the unique needs of each project participant. CVT staff and other consultants assess the clinical and organizational needs, program and administrative (including financial) infrastructure, technology infrastructure, and research and program evaluation capabilities. Consultations and grants are then arranged to best meet the needs identified in the assessment.
Facilitating Data Collection and Research CVT has developed a database system to track demographic and psychological diagnostic information on torture survivors receiving treatment. This system is distributed at no charge to the project participants. By creating a common platform for collecting and sharing data, we are improving the possibilities for research and program evaluation. This will make it possible to provide policy-makers with useful information regarding torture survivors living in the United States.
Ongoing Communication and Consulting Consultation by telephone and e-mail with CVT staff is also provided as needed.
