American Red Cross - Minneapolis Area Chapter

The American Red Cross - Minneapolis Area Chapter offers access to various Red Cross programs, including blood services, disaster relief, international programs, and multicultural programs designed to reduce health disparities. They offer a nursing assistant program and multi-lingual resource materials. Access to the American Red Cross-National Web site is available. Through the International Red Cross, services are offered to address the needs of the world’s most vulnerable populations, including Tracing and Red Cross Message, programs that attempt to help families separated as a result of a disaster or armed conflict communicate with one another.

National headquarters of the American Refugee Committee (ARC) is located in the Twin Cities. This international organization promotes the health and well-being of displaced persons living throughout the world. In over 12 countries ARC assists people who have endured the ravages of war and civil conflict.  

Amnesty International Group 37

Amnesty International Group 37 is a local Minnesota chapter of Amnesty International. Their purpose is to address human rights violations worldwide and to work towards the goals of freeing prisoners of conscience; gain fair trials for political prisoners; end torture, political killings and "disappearances”; and abolish the death penalty throughout the world. Catholic Charities is a social service organization that serves those in need. They offer programs that assist refugees in resettlement and employment.

Center for Cross-Cultural Health

The Center for Cross-Cultural Health helps to promote cross-cultural understanding and to integrate the role of culture in health care. They train health care providers, social service providers, and others to foster greater cultural competency. Their Web site offers access to organizations addressing cross-cultural health and education.

Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches

The Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches (GMCC) is a multi-denominational faith-based organization focused on assisting struggling people in Minnesota to remain self-reliant. Working with social service programs, GMCC offers assistance to new political asylees living in Hennepin County.

The Office of Multicultural Service Delivery through Hennepin County helps their Limited English Proficiency population access county services. Their goals are to enhance culturally and linguistically appropriate services.

Human Rights Program - University of Minnesota

The Human Rights Program at the University of Minnesota provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to take classes and to conduct research in the field of human rights. As well as describing events and classes, the Web site provides a database of human rights internships in Minnesota and throughout the world.

The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota is a nonprofit law firm that provides assistance to low-income immigrant and refugee families and individuals. They offer legal representation, advice, and referral on immigration matters, including asylum, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and citizenship. They also offer community education and training.

International Institute of Minnesota

The International Institute of Minnesota is a social service agency that serves both foreign and native-born individuals. An affiliate of the Immigrant and Refugee Services of America, they offer refugee resettlement services and educational opportunities, such as language learning and citizenship. They are involved with cultural programs, including the Festival of Nations. They also publish the Minnesota Ethnic Resources Directory.

Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota

Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota is a nonprofit organization addressing the needs of youth and families, seniors and persons with disabilities, in addition to working with immigrants and refugees.

Minneapolis Foundation

The Minneapolis Foundation, one of the largest community foundations in the country, provides fund and gift options to support nonprofit organizations in Minnesota and throughout the nation. Their Web site offers information for donors, funders, and grant seekers. It also includes annual demographic information on immigrants living in Minnesota, with graphs and charts of migration changes in the state.

Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights is a volunteer-based legal organization seeking to promote and protect human rights. They work locally, nationally, and internationally on human rights issues affecting children, women, refugees, immigrants, and marginalized populations.
