Building Healing Resources for Torture Survivors Statewide

People who survive torture are unlikely to talk about their experiences. Yet the trauma they suffered may affect their health, education, work performance and family life.

CVT offers training programs for professionals who work with survivors of torture and war trauma, including psychologists, social workers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, interpreters and educators.

Programs can be designed or customized for any group.

Our training programs include:

Introduction to Torture and Its Consequences
Target audience: Social service providers, therapists, attorneys, law enforcement, teachers, medical professionals.
Participants learn:

  • What torture and war trauma are
  • Common effects of torture
  • How survivors come to the United States.

Secondary Trauma

Target audience: therapists, social workers, interpreters, educators, attorneys and others who work with trauma survivors.
Participants learn:

  • About secondary trauma and its affects on service providers
  • The importance of self-care when working with trauma survivors
  • Ways to lessen secondary trauma personally, professionally and organizationally.

Psychological Effects of Torture and War Trauma
Target audience: Psychologists, clinical social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, educators, attorneys, medical professionals.
Participants learn:

  • How war and torture affect mental health
  • How torture survivors' relationships are commonly changed
  • How to adapt services for torture and war trauma survivors.
