Ending Torture in a Post 9/11 World

  • CVT submitted a Shadow Report to the UN Human Rights Committee on US Compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), specifically on accountability for torture committee by the United States post 9/11 and detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility (March 2014). The U.S. government was given one year to report on progress toward ICCPR compliance, after which NGOs were invited to submit follow up Shadow Reports. CVT submitted a follow up report (May 2015).
  • CVT Policy Report:  U.S. Bi-Partisan Leadership Against Torture, marking the 25th Anniversary of the Reagan Administration signing the U.N Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment (April 2013)

  • CVT released a new estimate of the torture prevalence rate amongst refugees in the United States, revealing at 44% of refugees are either primary or secondary survivors of torture and that approximately 1.3 million refugee survivors of torture are living in the United States today. This research reinforces the importance of robust funding to support torture survivor rehabilitation programs in the United States (September 2015) 
  • CVT, in partnership with the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs, submitted a Shadow Report on Article 14: The Right to Rehabilitation to the UN Committee against Torture during its review of U.S. compliance with the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment (November 2014)
  • Testimony to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights: “The Syrian Refugee Crisis,” calling on the US government to make larger investments in specialized trauma rehabilitation services for Syrian refugees displaced in the Middle East and being resettled to the United States (January 2014)
