Former CVT Board Member to Publish Book Detailing Doctors Who Torture

Steven H. Miles, MD, former CVT board member and professor emeritus of medicine and bioethics at the University of Minnesota, will publish a book in March reviewing physician complicity with torture: The Torture Doctors: Human Rights Crimes and the Road to Justice (Georgetown University Press). In this book, Dr. Miles details physicians who assist governments and regimes in torture, and how they create and administer techniques to inflict suffering without leaving scars.
“This book is my discovery of a submerged wreck in the global house of medicine,” said Dr. Miles in a recent Bioethics.net interview. “After six years of research, the one thing that I am sure of is that I have only found a minuscule percent of the physicians and medical organizations that failed the interests of tortured human beings and thus have failed to engage the scourge of global torture itself.”
CVT applauds this great research effort, which also depicts human rights advocates and NGOs leading a movement holding these doctors accountable for their abuses. During his time on our board, CVT benefitted from Dr. Miles’ scholarly leadership. With the publication of The Torture Doctors, the world will benefit from it as well.
