Friday, March 21, 2014

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today released a report on the number of asylum claims in 44 industrialized countries. The report, Asylum Trends 2013, finds 612,700 people applied for asylum in North America, Europe, East Asia and the Pacific last year – the highest total for any year since 2001. According to UNHCR, the significant increase in applications is primarily due to the crisis in Syria. The United States received a total of 88,400 asylum claims, 25 percent more than in 2012.
