U of M national survey finds lack of mental health screenings for refugees
The first national survey of refugee mental health screening practices found that while refugee trauma survivors are at increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder and major depression, most states do not provide mental health screenings. The survey, conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota in collaboration with the State Refugee Health Coordinator and CVT, was recently published in the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies.

Dianne Feinstein torture report may conflict with Bin Laden movie
Ahead of the vote by the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on whether to adopt its report on the CIA's detention and interrogation program after September 11, 2001, CVT Executive Director Curt Goering joined a retired general and a former military interrogator to discuss why it is so important for the committee to adopt the report.

Cultures and immigration beat: Film gives voice to torture survivors
A special screening of the film, "Beneath the Blindfold," will take place in the Twin Cities in conjunction with International Human Rights Day. The screening is cosponsored by The Advocates for Human Rights, The Center for Victims of Torture, The Human Rights Program at the University of Minnesota, the Midwest Coalition for Human Rights, and the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center.

CVT Executive Director Curt Goering's letter to Bob Schieffer of CBS News and moderator of the third 2012 presidential debate is quoted in this column. Goering writes, "If you anticipate a discussion about interrogations in U.S. counterterrorism efforts, CVT respectfully requests that any line of questioning not include references to 'enhanced interrogation techniques' or other misnomers for torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment."
