Center for Victims of Torture Responds to Memphis Police Beating Video

Friday, January 27, 2023

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Center for Victims of Torture™ (CVT) today issued this statement as video footage was released of the deadly beating of Tyre Nichols by police in Memphis.

"The Center for Victims of Torture is horrified by the video released tonight of the deadly police beating of Tyre Nichols in Memphis on 7 January. The behavior of police in the video demonstrates aspects of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment of an unarmed civilian.

“The footage is traumatizing and sickening. Our hearts are with the Nichols family as they face the unimaginable pain of Tyre’s cruel and unnecessary death.

“For real change to take place, we must have legal accountability for the murder of Tyre, and an end to law enforcement cultures that encourage disproportionate and deadly police violence in the United States.” -Dr. Simon Adams, CVT president & CEO
