Trial for George Floyd’s Murder Must Result in Justice

Thursday, March 4, 2021

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Center for Victims of Torture™ (CVT) today issued this statement as the trial for one of the men who murdered George Floyd nears.

“As the trial for the disgraced former police officer who tortured George Floyd to death gets underway, the world is watching. But, as we know, the world has been watching. And yet, Black Americans have been and continue to be targeted, abused, arbitrarily detained, beaten, shot and tortured.

“Ours is a system of systemic racism. And until this system is destroyed and rebuilt anew, assuring that the human rights of Black people are recognized and protected, nothing will truly change. These crimes must not continue to go unpunished.

“One step toward making genuine change is delivering justice for George Floyd. As we at CVT know all too well, accountability is rare. This trial is an opportunity for accountability, a concept that is willfully ignored far, far too often in the U.S. and around the world. This trial can make a difference. Accountability is a necessary step toward breaking the cycle of systemic abuses of power against, and disregard for the full humanity of, Black communities.

“But it is not sufficient. We must also acknowledge and dismantle the structural and cultural racism that permeates the United States’ criminal justice system, at the federal, state and local levels alike. Until then, nothing will change.” — Curt Goering, CVT executive director
