#FamiliesBelongTogether | Center for Victims of Torture

"One day, I got home from work, and I couldn’t find my wife," said a CVT client named Mebratu. "I spent months trying to find her. I didn't understand."

After another client, Bushra, paid a bribe to get her two teenage sons released from prison, she told us, "Regardless of what I lost, I just want to go where my children will be safest.”

These stories aren't uncommon. 67 percent of CVT's U.S.-based clients have been separated from their families. That's two out of three clients at our St. Paul Healing Center, where we see clients from around the world.

Their oppressors understand the power of family. They use the love between family members to force people to do what they want.

Despots threaten to throw mothers and wives into prison, or hold family members hostage until their demands are met. They seek to destroy families because those bonds threaten their control.

At CVT, we also understand the power of family. We’ve witnessed the sheer devastation separation causes, as well as the transformative healing power of reunification.

Advocate for families with CVT. Support us as we support survivors, and continue to show the world that #FamiliesBelongTogether.
