PAUL, Minn. — The Center for Victims of Torture™ (CVT) today issued this statement following the killing of Daunte Wright by police in Minnesota.“Daunte Wright, a young, unarmed Black man, is dead after being shot and killed by police in Minnesota. That this fatal shooting—an outrage in and of itself—occurred even as former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for killing George Floyd is horrific. Tragedies like this illustrate all too clearly the systemic racism and ingrained practices of brutality and violence that permeate U.S. policing. The repeated trauma inflicted upon communities of color and the families of the victims by these and other deaths at the hands of law enforcement is intolerable. We grieve for Mr. Wright’s family, his loved ones, and for the community. “We call for a thorough, immediate and independent investigation. The killing of Black people must stop. We demand justice for Daunte Wright.” — Curt Goering, CVT executive director-###-The Center for Victims of Torture is a nonprofit organization headquartered in St. Paul, MN, with offices in Atlanta, GA, and Washington, D.C.; and healing initiatives in Africa and the Middle East.
