Volunteer at CVT

Last updated: September 10, 2024

At the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT), we support survivors of torture as they rebuild their lives and communities. Because healing and justice are human rights, we use a variety of tools and approaches to extend rehabilitative care to survivors, strengthen the skills of human rights defenders and professionals who support survivors, and advocate for policies that call for accountability for torture.

All of these endeavors require skills, commitment and compassion. That’s where the support of our dedicated and highly-valued volunteers comes in. CVT is honored to work with volunteers who share their skills and time with clients and with our team, supporting survivors in their journey to healing. We hope you will consider joining our volunteer team!

  • Serve as family guides, connecting with a client’s family as well.

CVT community guides work closely with survivors who have begun participating in rehabilitative care at one of our healing centers. Survivors living in the United States have left their countries to escape torture and persecution, so in many cases, clients are learning a new culture, a new language and new skills for healing. Community guides act as an important bridge between the client and the new environment, helping them to become more independent. Successful community guides build a relationship with survivors and become a consistent presence in their lives.
