COMMUNITY GUIDE

Last updated: July 29, 2024

CVT community guides work closely with survivors who have begun participating in rehabilitative care at one of our healing centers. Survivors living in the United States have left their countries to escape torture and persecution, so in many cases, clients are learning a new culture, a new language and new skills for healing. Community guides act as an important bridge between the client and the new environment, helping them to become more independent. Successful community guides build a relationship with survivors and become a consistent presence in their lives.

Activities

  • Spend time with clients, listening and talking.
  • Accompany clients to stores, libraries, pharmacies and other errands.
  • Enjoy social activities together, such as outdoor experiences, museums, conservatories, concerts, plays, etc., with an emphasis on free or low-cost activities.
  • Some community guides will serve as family guides, connecting with a client’s family as well.

Skills needed

  • Ability to establish a trusting and respectful relationship.
  • Ability to serve as a guide to the wider community.
  • Care and sensitivity to issues of confidentiality, privacy and security.
  • Understanding of privilege and power dynamics that can arise.

  • CVT conducts background checks on all applicants. This will take about a week.
  • Long-term: Six-month minimum commitment, up to 8-10 hours per month.
