Yumna Rizvi, senior policy analyst, published this op ed in Responsible Statecraft as the United States’ fuel blockade continues in Cuba and the UN warns of an imminent humanitarian collapse – people are facing food shortages and lack of medical care. However, the U.S. has responded by threatening to put any fleeing Cubans in Guantánamo detention facility. “Guantánamo clearly cannot adequately house a wave of people seeking safety. Rather, the U.S. would be deliberately holding them in the worst place we can think of,” Yumna writes. “This is not accidental. Guantánamo is not just a base; it is a symbol meant to deter and instill fear.”
