CVT Stands with the Somali Community

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) issued this statement in response to recent negative remarks from President Trump about the Somali community in Minneapolis.

“The president’s derogatory comments about the Somali community in Minneapolis are deeply harmful and divisive, and palpably untrue,” said Dr. Simon Adams, CVT president and CEO. “His criticism is meant to sow division. His words do not reflect the reality of the enormous benefits Minnesota gains from the Somali community, including cultural vibrancy, as well as the economic and social contributions of this unique community.”

From CVT’s 40-year history in Minnesota, we know that a core value for Minnesotans is to treat all people with dignity and respect. The Somali community is an integral part of Minnesota’s social fabric. Many Somali families originally came to the state seeking safety, opportunity and the chance to rebuild their lives free from violence and conflict. Their contributions enrich our neighborhoods, strengthen our workforce and add to the quality of life that makes Minnesota great.

As an organization dedicated to healing survivors of torture and the trauma that results from violent armed conflict, CVT stands firmly with the Somali community. Adams said, “We know firsthand the impacts of this kind of toxic rhetoric. Words that denigrate, target or demean any group are unacceptable, especially when they come from national leaders who should know better.”

CVT rejects these attempts to divide Minnesotans and Americans. Instead, we call on our neighbors, community partners and political leaders to stand together. “We are strongest when all communities in Minnesota and across America are valued and everyone is treated with compassion and mutual respect,” said Adams. “We must rise above offensive rhetoric that fuels fear or hatred of our neighbors simply because they look or worship differently. We should reaffirm our shared commitment to welcoming refugees and supporting human rights.”
