CVT Applauds Supreme Court Decision to Uphold Birthright Citizenship

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Center for Victims of Torture™ (CVT) today issued this statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of keeping birthright citizenship.

“We celebrate the Supreme Court’s ruling today that prohibits President Trump from removing birthright citizenship for all children born in the United States. Birthright citizenship has been a principle under the 14th Amendment for more than 100 years. Its protections have allowed millions of people to live and thrive in the U.S., helping to build the vibrant fabric of our communities, workplaces and daily lives.

“This is a ray of light in a time of aggressive anti-immigration policy and action. In his opinion for the court, Chief Justice Roberts wrote ‘Citizenship, then and now was the right to have rights — to freely participate in our political community. The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land.’ We keep that promise today.’ We hope leaders continue to recognize the promises of America and the importance of humane and lawful principles.” -Yumna Rizvi, senior policy analyst
